Everyone knows DMW. The record label Davido started then in 2016 shortly after leaving HKN and getting a recording contract with Sony. We all know it’s probably the label with the most artistes. Successful and big artistes from Mayorkun, Peruzzi, Dremo, Idowest and Yonda. Factor in some of the biggest producers right now, SperoachBeatz and FreshVdm.
But success is not about the team or the brand but if each individual unit is succeeding and making it. Yeah, Davido is in that box, so check, Mayorkun, check, Dremo, Arrgh, can’t say, Yonda, nah, Idowest, nah, Peruzzi, tight.
Only Davido and Mayorkun have attained that stats of success. Davido and Mayorkun have so far had back to back end of the year concerts. Sold out. Same can’t be said for Dremo who also got signed the same day as Mayorkun. His career stalled at a time, but he’s on a resurgence especally after his near successful project, Idowest, Yonda and Peruzzi haven’t had any major concerts except some lowkey gigs.
Hits wise, Davido and Mayorkun have been able to record at least two hits for two successful years now. Davido with Fia, Fall, If in 2017, followed it up with Assurance, Nwa Baby, Aza last year, then we had Mayorkun with Che Che, Mama in 2017 backing it up with Posh and several sleeper hits in his TMOL album.
DMW might be the biggest record label right now with the retinue of artistes in their team but big names doesn’t translate to success. Success has its metrics and standards and so far only Mayorkun and Davido have been the only one to have attained those standards. If we factor in endorsements, personal achievements like awards and number of streams on digital stores like Spotify and views on YouTube, the likes of Yonda, Idowest, Dremo and Peruzzi fall short in this aspect.
